The HCC catalog lists the start date for Summer Session 2007 as Thursday, May 20. The actual start date for Summer Semester is Thursday, May 17.

Botanical Nomenclature - BRIEF REVIEW

Example: Picea pungens var. glauca 'Fat Albert'

1. a species name = the genus name plus the specific epithet
2. genus, specific epithet, and variety (may or may not be present) name are italicized
3. Genus is capitalized; species and variety are not
4. Cultivar name should not be italicized, but instead placed in single quotes and capitalized
5. italicization and underlining are equivalent, but use one or the other consistently

This is an oversimplification of the many rules, but it should get you through the initial assignments. If you have more questions please ask.

Completing Modules

When completing modules you need not turn in anything for the learning objectives or the terms to know. The learning objectives explain what you should be able to do when you complete the module. Terms to know are vocabulary words that you should be able to use in completing the module or in answering questions on the final exam.

What are your exams like?

I try to make the online course exams as applied as possible. For example, you might be required to analyze a real landscape design, develop a crop production schedule, or estimate the cost of a landscaping job.

These exams are normally open book, open notes, open Internet, etc. The exams are more about measuring skills learned and applications than memorization. I also answer questions concerning the exam and allow a week or so to complete them.

How do I submit assignments?

This applies to all the online courses.

1. log onto Google Mail at http://mail.google.com
2. go to Docs & Spreadsheets
3. create a new document with the title HOR Course number Your last name Module number for example Jane Smith would turn create a document entitled HOR 168 Smith Module 3
4. enter the work required by the assignment
5. add me as a collaborator - buddy.tignor@gmail.com when you are ready for me to grade the assignment
6. if you have drawings or other items that you are not able to submit using the google document process use snail mail to get send them...just make sure they are postmarked by the same day the assignment is due
7. send mailed assignments to:

What about sample collection when I travel or live out of state?

Occasionally, I ask students to collect some soils, leaves, flowers, etc. If you are traveling or reside out of Western North Carolina please feel free to collect the samples locally. Please remember to respect other individual's property and concerns. For example, always ask permission before sample collecting and if someone asks what you are doing...kindly and politely explain it to them. You would be surprised, for every 1 person that will not allow you to collect something there are 10 more who will volunteer their help in an educational situation.

Where can I purchase textbooks?

Several students have had questions about purchasing textbooks. If for some reason the HCC bookstore does not have them there a few other places that I have found can get you most books quickly at a reasonable price.
